When the temperature drops or the rain rolls in, not every dog is built to handle it. Small breeds, short-haired dogs, seniors and lean, thin-coated breeds can get cold quickly, making winter walks uncomfortable and even unsafe. A good dog coat keeps your dog warm, dry and happy so you can keep up your daily walks in any weather. At T-Rex Pets, our dog coats collection includes insulated winter coats, waterproof raincoats, puffer jackets, fleece-lined coats and reflective jackets in sizes for small, medium and large dogs.
Does My Dog Need a Coat?
Many dogs with thick double coats, such as Huskies, Malamutes, Bernese Mountain Dogs and Newfoundlands, are built for cold weather and usually don't need a coat. Others benefit a lot from extra warmth:
-
Small and toy breeds like Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Miniature Pinschers and Dachshunds, which lose body heat quickly.
-
Short-haired breeds such as Boxers, Pit Bull-type dogs, Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs.
-
Lean, thin-coated breeds like Greyhounds, Whippets and Italian Greyhounds, which have little body fat.
-
Senior dogs, who may have more trouble regulating temperature, and dogs with arthritis, as cold can make stiff joints worse.
-
Puppies and dogs recovering from illness.
-
Dogs with a short trim or clipped coat during winter.
Watch for shivering, lifting paws, slowing down, hunching or trying to turn back home. These are signs your dog is cold.
Types of Dog Coats and Jackets
Winter Coats
Insulated winter coats are designed for freezing temperatures and snow. Look for fleece or quilted linings and coverage over the chest and belly, where many dogs have less fur.
Puffer Jackets
Puffer-style dog jackets provide lightweight warmth with a stylish look. They're easy to move in and great for everyday cold-weather walks.
Raincoats
Waterproof dog raincoats keep coats dry and cut down on the wet-dog smell and the towel-off routine after rainy walks. Hooded styles help keep heads dry too.
Fleece Jackets
Fleece jackets are soft, light and comfortable for chilly days and indoor wear. They layer well under a raincoat on cold, wet days. For lighter, cozy layers, see our dog sweaters.
Reflective and High-Visibility Coats
Reflective trim or bright colors help drivers and cyclists see your dog on dark winter mornings and evenings.
Harness-Compatible Coats
Many coats have a leash opening so you can clip onto a harness worn underneath. Pair with a comfortable harness from our dog harnesses collection.
How to Measure Your Dog for a Coat
A good fit keeps your dog warm without restricting movement. Use a soft measuring tape and measure while your dog is standing:
-
Back length: From the base of the neck, where the collar sits, to the base of the tail.
-
Chest girth: Around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. This is usually the most important measurement.
-
Neck: Around the base of the neck where the collar rests.
Compare your measurements to the size chart for each coat. If your dog falls between sizes, size up for comfort, especially for deep-chested breeds or if your dog will wear a harness underneath. You should be able to fit two fingers under the coat at the chest and neck.
What to Look for in a Dog Coat
-
Warmth and weather protection: Insulation for cold, waterproof shell for rain, or both.
-
Belly and chest coverage: Important for short-haired and small dogs that are close to cold ground.
-
Freedom of movement: The coat shouldn't rub under the legs or limit walking.
-
Easy on and off: Velcro, buckles or zippers make dressing simple, especially for wiggly dogs.
-
Easy to clean: Machine-washable coats are a big plus after muddy walks.
-
Safety features: Reflective details and a leash or harness opening.
Getting Your Dog Used to Wearing a Coat
Some dogs accept a coat immediately, while others need time. Let your dog sniff the coat first and reward them. Drape it over their back for a few seconds, then fasten it briefly indoors, rewarding calm behavior with dog training treats. Gradually increase the time before heading outside. Most dogs quickly learn that the coat means a walk.
Cold Weather Safety Tips
-
Shorten walks in extreme cold and watch for signs your dog is uncomfortable.
-
Protect paws from ice, snow and de-icing salt with dog boots and balm from dog paw care.
-
Dry your dog thoroughly after wet walks.
-
Remove the coat indoors to prevent overheating, and don't leave a coat on an unsupervised dog.
-
Provide a warm, draft-free bed. See dog beds.
