Your dog's paws carry them through every walk, run, hike and zoomie. They handle hot pavement in summer, icy sidewalks and de-icing salt in winter, rough trails and everything in between. Healthy paw pads are tough, but they aren't indestructible. Dog paw care products help keep pads soft, protected and comfortable year-round. At T-Rex Pets, our dog paw care collection includes moisturizing paw balms, protective paw wax, paw cleaners and soothing treatments for dry, cracked and sensitive paws.
Why Paw Care Is Important
-
Prevents cracking: Dry pads can split and crack, which is painful and can let in dirt and bacteria.
-
Protects against weather: Hot asphalt can burn pads, while snow, ice and salt dry them out and cause irritation.
-
Reduces licking and chewing: Itchy, irritated paws often lead to constant licking.
-
Keeps your dog active: Comfortable paws mean your dog can walk, run and play without discomfort.
-
Supports seniors: Older dogs often have thinner, drier pads and benefit from extra moisture.
Types of Dog Paw Care Products
Paw Balm
Paw balms are moisturizing treatments made with natural butters, oils and waxes like shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax and vitamin E. They soften rough pads, help soothe dryness and support healing of minor cracks. Most are safe if licked, but check the label.
Paw Wax
Protective paw wax forms a thin, breathable barrier on the pads before walks. It helps shield paws from hot pavement, snow, ice, salt and rough ground. It's a great option for dogs that won't wear boots.
Paw Cleaners
Foaming paw cleaners and paw washer cups clean dirt, mud and allergens from between toes after walks. For quick cleanups, try dog grooming wipes made for paws.
Paw Soothers and Sprays
Soothing sprays and gels with ingredients like aloe can calm irritated paws. If your dog's paws are red, swollen or constantly licked, check with your vet to rule out allergies or infection.
Paw Protection Gear
For extreme weather or rough terrain, nothing protects better than boots. Explore our dog boots collection.
Common Paw Problems and How to Help
Dry, cracked pads: Apply paw balm once or twice daily, ideally at bedtime when your dog is resting. Distract your dog for a few minutes so the balm can absorb.
Hot pavement burns: Asphalt can get far hotter than the air on sunny days. Try the five-second test: hold the back of your hand on the pavement. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for paws. Walk early or late in the day and use paw wax or boots.
Winter salt and ice: De-icing salts can irritate and dry pads, and some are harmful if licked. Apply paw wax before walks and wipe or rinse paws as soon as you get home.
Allergies and licking: Pollen, grass and other allergens can make paws itchy. Wipe paws after outdoor time and talk to your vet if licking is constant. Supplements from our dog skin and coat collection may support skin health.
Overgrown fur between pads: Long hair between the toes can collect ice balls, burrs and mud and reduce traction. Trim it carefully with rounded grooming scissors.
Long nails: Overgrown nails change how weight is spread across the paw. Keep them short with tools from our dog nail care collection.
How to Choose the Right Paw Care Product
-
For dry or cracked paws: Choose a rich, moisturizing paw balm.
-
For protection on walks: Choose a paw wax or boots.
-
For everyday cleaning: Choose paw wipes or a foaming cleaner.
-
Look for lick-safe ingredients: Dogs will lick their paws, so choose products made for dogs with natural, non-toxic ingredients.
-
Avoid human lotions: Many contain fragrances, zinc oxide or other ingredients that aren't safe for dogs to lick.
-
Texture matters: Non-greasy, fast-absorbing formulas are less likely to leave marks on floors and furniture.
A Simple Weekly Paw Care Routine
-
Inspect: Check pads and between toes for cuts, cracks, splinters, burrs or redness.
-
Clean: Wipe or rinse paws after walks, especially in winter and allergy season.
-
Trim: Keep nails short and trim excess fur between pads.
-
Moisturize: Apply paw balm to dry pads a few times a week, or daily if needed.
-
Protect: Use paw wax or boots for hot, icy or rough conditions.
-
Reward: Make paw handling positive with praise and treats.
When to See the Vet
Paw care products help with everyday dryness and protection, but some problems need professional care. Contact your vet if you notice deep cuts, bleeding, limping, swelling, pus, a foul smell, a torn nail, burns or blisters, or constant licking and chewing of the paws.
