Keep the food in its original bag, folded and clipped, placed inside an airtight container. Owners routinely pour kibble loose into a bin, which is a mistake on two counts: the bag has a grease barrier the container doesn't, and it carries the lot number and best-before date you would need if a recall were issued.

Store somewhere cool, dark and dry. A garage that reaches 90°F in summer accelerates fat oxidation and will turn a good food rancid well before you finish the bag. Aim to use an opened bag within about six weeks - which is a reason to buy a bag size matched to your dog rather than always buying the biggest.

If your dog suddenly refuses a food they've eaten happily for months, smell it yourself before concluding they've become fussy. Rancid fat is a common and frequently missed explanation.

What does "complete and balanced" mean on dog food?
It means the food meets the nutrient requirements established by AAFCO for a specific life stage - growth, adult maintenance, or all life stages - and can be fed as the sole diet. The statement will also say whether the food was formulated to meet the profiles on paper, or validated through animal feeding trials, the latter being the higher standard. Products without this statement, including many toppers and mixers, are not intended to be a dog's only food.
How do I compare protein between wet and dry dog food?
Convert both to a dry matter basis, since wet food is mostly water. Divide the crude protein percentage by the dry matter percentage, which is 100 minus the moisture percentage. A dry food at 26% protein and 10% moisture works out to 28.9% on a dry matter basis. A wet food at 9% protein and 78% moisture works out to 40.9% - considerably higher, despite the lower label figure. Always convert before comparing across formats.
What's the best dog food for large breed puppies?

The critical factor is controlled calcium and phosphorus - excess calcium during the growth phase is associated with developmental orthopaedic disease in large and giant breeds, and this is one of the more consequential feeding decisions you'll make.
