Head shaking, scratching and a funky smell coming from your dog's ears are all signs that ear care deserves a spot in your grooming routine. A dog's ear canal is long and L-shaped, which makes it easy for wax, moisture and debris to get trapped. That warm, damp environment is exactly where yeast and bacteria like to grow. Regular cleaning with the right products helps keep ears healthy and comfortable. At T-Rex Pets, our dog ear care collection includes gentle ear cleaning solutions, drying formulas, ear wipes and grooming tools for dogs of every breed.
Why Dog Ear Care Matters
-
Removes wax and debris: Cleaning keeps buildup from blocking the canal and trapping moisture.
-
Reduces odor: Clean ears smell neutral, not yeasty or sour.
-
Helps prevent problems: Keeping ears clean and dry supports a healthy ear environment, especially for dogs prone to ear issues.
-
Early detection: Regular ear checks help you notice redness, swelling or discharge early, so you can see your vet sooner.
Which Dogs Need Ear Care the Most?
All dogs benefit from ear checks, but some need extra attention:
-
Floppy-eared breeds like Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds, Beagles and Labradors, because their ear flaps trap warmth and moisture.
-
Swimmers and water lovers, since water left in the ear canal creates a damp environment.
-
Dogs with hairy ear canals, such as Poodles, Shih Tzus and Schnauzers.
-
Dogs with allergies, as allergies are a common underlying cause of recurring ear problems.
-
Dogs bathed often, because water can get into the ears during baths.
Types of Dog Ear Care Products
Ear Cleaning Solutions
Liquid ear cleaners are squeezed into the ear canal to loosen wax and debris, which then works out as your dog shakes their head. Look for gentle, non-irritating formulas made for dogs. Many contain ingredients like aloe for soothing.
Drying Ear Cleaners
Drying formulas help evaporate moisture after swimming or baths, which is especially helpful for water-loving dogs.
Ear Wipes
Pre-moistened ear wipes are a quick, easy way to clean the visible parts of the ear and the inside of the ear flap. They're great for routine maintenance and travel. Find more in our dog grooming wipes collection.
Ear Powders and Grooming Tools
Ear powders help groomers grip and remove excess hair from the ear canal in breeds that grow a lot of it. Ask your groomer or vet whether hair removal is right for your dog.
Cotton Balls and Gauze
Soft cotton balls and gauze are the safest tools for wiping away loosened wax. Avoid cotton swabs inside the ear canal, which can push debris deeper or injure the ear.
How to Clean Your Dog's Ears Step by Step
-
Gather supplies: Dog ear cleaner, cotton balls or gauze, a towel and treats.
-
Check first: Look inside the ear. If it's red, swollen, painful, smelly or has discharge, skip cleaning and call your vet.
-
Apply the cleaner: Gently lift the ear flap and fill the canal with cleaner as directed on the label.
-
Massage the base: Gently massage the base of the ear for 20 to 30 seconds. You should hear a squishing sound as the cleaner loosens debris.
-
Let your dog shake: Step back and let them shake their head. A towel helps catch the spray.
-
Wipe: Use a cotton ball or gauze to wipe away loosened wax from the ear opening and flap. Only clean as far as your finger easily reaches.
-
Reward your dog with treats and praise. Our dog training treats are perfect for this.
How Often Should You Clean Your Dog's Ears?
Many dogs only need an ear clean every few weeks, while dogs with floppy ears, swimmers or dogs prone to ear issues may benefit from weekly cleaning. Over-cleaning can irritate the ear, so follow your vet's advice and the product label. Checking ears weekly, even when you don't clean them, is a great habit. A good time to clean is right after a bath with your favorite dog shampoo or after swimming.
Signs of an Ear Problem
Ear cleaners are for routine care and are not a treatment for ear infections. See your vet if you notice:
-
Frequent head shaking or tilting
-
Scratching or rubbing the ears
-
Redness, swelling or heat in the ear
-
Yellow, brown or black discharge
-
A strong or unpleasant odor
-
Pain when the ear is touched
-
Crusting, scabs or hair loss around the ear
-
Loss of balance or unusual eye movements
Dark, crumbly debris that looks like coffee grounds can be a sign of ear mites, which also need a vet diagnosis and treatment.
Tips for Healthy Ears
-
Dry your dog's ears gently with a towel after baths and swimming.
-
Check ears weekly during grooming or cuddle time.
-
Keep the fur around the ear opening trimmed for better airflow.
-
If your dog has recurring ear problems, ask your vet about allergies. Our dog skin and coat supplements and dog food for allergies may help support skin health.
