Pet Tarantula care

Pet tarantulas can be fun to have around, especially those that can be handled. They have also been known to keep other spiders away with their pheromones. While they can bite if they are startled or feel threatened, they can be calm and personable.

Care Tips

Tarantulas are fairly easy to care for and take up little space. However, there are many species and you should conduct your own research regarding your specific spider. They generally only require a 5 gallon tank. Any larger will make finding prey more difficult. Line the bottom of the enclosure with a layer of vermiculite, or vermiculite mixed with potting soil and/or peat, that's at least 2 to 4 inches deep to allow for burrowing. Your tarantula also needs a place to hide. A piece of cork bark, a half hollow log, or half a clay flowerpot on its side are all good options. Tarantulas don't need bright lights and should be kept out of direct sunlight. They also generally don't need heat lamps, as most species do fine at room temperature. Some species need high humidity levels by misting daily. Spot clean the enclosure as needed, and remove uneaten food daily. It's generally recommended to do a full cleaning of the enclosure, including a change of the vermiculite bedding, every four to six months.

Diet

Tarantulas eat crickets, mealworms, superworms, roaches, and other insects. In some instances they can eat small pinkie mice or small lizards. Generally they will only eat things smaller than their body. They need a water dish with clean water at all times. Make sure to not put too much water so that they won't drown.

Contact A Vet If:

* Shriveled or lethargic

* Trouble molting

- Do not handle while molting. Generally it is not a good idea to feed them while molting.
